Over a 1000 pipers died during WWI. These extraordinary men were sitting ducks as they went over the top to pipe their men into battle. Piper Harry Lunan was the last surviving piper and he said,
“I just played whatever came in to my head, but I was worried about tripping on the uneven ground, which interrupted my playing. The enemy fire was murderous, the men were falling all around me. I was lucky to survive. Hearing the pipes gave the troops courage.”
I wrote my senior history capstone paper on that operation, particularly about the geology involved in the mining. It is said that 10,000 Germans were killed when the 19 mines detonated (2 failed to blow), most of whom were killed in their trenches as they clamped shut due to the massive displacement of earth... most grim.
Antoine Favreau was a Carabinier-à-cheval (mounted carabiner) during the time of the Napoleonic Wars. The Carabinier were a body of heavy cavalry which wore highly polished breastplates and were armed with a short carbine musket which gave them the name, a saber and a pair of pistols.
Antoine Favreau took part in the Battle of Waterloo, which marked the decline of the Napoleonic empire. Favreau died in that battle from what looks to be a 4 or 6 pdr cannon ball to the chest. This armor can be seen at the Army Museum in Paris
In the 20's and 30's the Germans were still working on re-arming. The Kriegsmarine, often overlooked by the powers that be, had to make due with these improvised battleships. (I made this up)
